Abstract
THE VARIOUS TYPES OF GRANTS AVAILABLE THROUGH LEAA AND THE ROLE OF THE STATE PLANNING AGENCIES IN THE GRANT PROCESS ARE DESCRIBED. MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS OF LEAA ARE OUTLINED; THESE INCLUDE THE NATIONAL CRIME PANEL SURVEY OF VICTIMIZATION; THE PUBLICATION OF THE NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMISSION ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE STANDARDS AND GOALS; THE HIGH IMPACT ANTICRIME PROGRAM; LEAA-SPONSORED STUDIES OF JAILS, JURY UTILIZATION, COURTS, AND JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES, DEVELOPMENT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE INFORMATION SYSTEMS; AND ADVANCES IN NEW EQUIPMENT. PRINCIPLE PROVISIONS OF LEAA LEGISLATION ARE SUMMARIZED AND A BRIEF FUNDING HISTORY IS PROVIDED. LEAA PROGRAMS IN THE AREAS OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE RESEARCH, POLICE ACTIVITIES, COURT REFORM, CORRECTIONS, JUVENILE JUSTICE, COMMUNITY CRIME PREVENTION, LAW ENFORCEMENT EDUCATION, AND ORGANIZED CRIME ARE DESCRIBED AS WELL.
