This article describes local law enforcement agencies' involvement in the Working Connections grant program. The program offers information technology (IT) training programs to community colleges and financially disadvantaged students and at-risk youth, with the goal of directing them towards fields of the future and away from poverty and criminal behavior.
Abstract
In an effort to assist community college development of information technology (IT) training programs and to introduce these programs to disadvantaged students (focusing on young people at risk), the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) and Microsoft Corporation made grant money available through Working Connections, a community computer-training program. In an effort to provide community outreach and improve the quality of life in the areas they serve, police departments were encouraged to join in the partnership efforts. The article describes three police departments and their partnerships with their local community colleges in participating in the Working Connections/IT training program: (1) Monroe Community College and Monroe Police Department in New York; (2) St. Petersburg Junior College and Clearwater Police Department in Florida; and (3) St. Petersburg Junior College and Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. The article concludes with an outline of the process for obtaining IT Readiness Program grant funds.
