THE HISTORY OF THE EMPLOYMENT OF WOMEN AS POLICE OFFICERS IN BRITAIN IS TRACED FROM THE USE OF WOMEN AS CIVILIAN ASSISTANTS IN 1919 TO THE ADVANCES IN EQUAL EMPLOYMENT IN 1973.
Abstract
THE GRADUALLY EXPANDING ROLE OF POLICEWOMEN IS DEMONSTRATED IN THIS HISTORICAL REVIEW. THE AUTHOR STATES THAT WHILE POLICEWOMEN WERE MAINLY CONCERNED WITH WOMEN, CHILDREN, AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS, THEY ARE NOW ASSUMING ADDED RESPONSIBILITIES WHEN POSSIBLE. BY 1975, WOMEN POLICE OFFICERS IN BRITAIN ARE TO HAVE EQUAL PAY, CONDITIONS OF SERVICE, AND CHANGES OF PROMOTION. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
