Abstract
DEVELOPMENT OF THE INDIAN POLICE IS TRACED FROM THEIR ORIGINS IN 1869 TO THE PRESENT. AMONG THE TOPICS ADDRESSED IN THIS ARTICLE ARE THE JURISDICTION OF THE INDIAN POLICE, ORGANIZATION AND SUPERVISION OF TRIBAL OR INDIAN POLICE, AND RECENT INPROVEMENTS IN THE TRIBAL POLICE SYSTEMS. THESE INCLUDE IMPROVED TRAINING FOR BIA OFFICERS SERVING ON INDIAN LANDS, ESTABLISHMENT OF A RESEARCH UNIT ON THE INDIAN CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, CONSTRUCTION OF A NUMBER OF NEW REHABILITATION CENTERS, AND ESTABLISHMENT OF A SPECIAL OPERATIONS SERVICES UNIT FOR HANDLING CIVIL DISTURBANCES. FINALLY, EFFORTS TO UPGRADE POLICE SALARIES AND REQUIRE HIGHER STANDARDS FOR TRIBAL POLICE ARE DESCRIBED....DMC
