Abstract

The 23 reported incidents are cross-categorized by 1) type of activity and type of weapon used; 2) presence or absence of injury and type of weapon used; 3) type of activity and assignment; 4) type of activity, type of weapon used, and type of assignment; 5) time of assault and agency type; 6) type of activity and time of assault; 7) reporting agency and type of weapon; 8) reporting agency and month of assault; and 9) type of activity and grand totals for each year since 1980. In 1990, no officer was killed in the line of duty. Of all the assaults, one which involved use of a knife was the only one that involved any weapon other than personal body parts. About half (48 percent) occurred between the hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.; five occurred in June, and four in February. Nine (39 percent) occurred during responses to disturbance calls; five occurred during traffic pursuits and stops. Of the 22 officers assaulted with personal weapons, 19 sustained injuries. Since 1980, when there were 51 assaults, annual totals have generally declined, to 24 in 1988, and 23 in 1989 and 1990. 10 tables
