Abstract
Highlights from this report on the number of law enforcement officers killed or assaulted in 2011 include the following: 72 officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty during the year, while 53 died as a result of accidents that occurred in the line of duty; felonious line of duty deaths occurred in 30 States and Puerto Rico, while accidental line of duty deaths occurred in 23 States and Puerto Rico; the largest number of officers feloniously killed were from the South; 3 Federal officers were killed in the line of duty and 1,686 Federal law enforcement officers were assaulted; and the assault rate for officers in 2011 was 10.2 per 100 sworn officers, with 54,774 law enforcement officers assaulted while performing their duties. Data for this report were collected through the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. The data in the report reflects the number of victim officers and not the actual number of incidents or weapons that were used in the incidents.
