This report provides information on law enforcement officers killed by felonious assault during 2011.
Abstract
This report from the National Center for the Prevention of Violence Against the Police provides information on law enforcement officers killed by felonious assault in 2011. Key findings from the report include the following: in 2011, 72 officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty, an increase of 27 percent from the number killed in 2010; the most deadly type of incidents for officers were domestic or general disturbances, arrest situations, and ambush or traffic stop/pursuit; and other forms of deadly types of encounters included warrant service, investigating suspicious circumstances, and handling/transporting prisoners. The report presents a brief description of the circumstances for each of the 72 officers killed in 2011. The reasons for presenting the summaries of each line-of-duty death of an officer is to remind officers to continue to be vigilant at all times and in all situations, and to raise awareness on the need for continued training and prevention efforts.
