This text first outlines key issues in developing and administering inservice training programs for law enforcement officers and then addresses specific types of training, including supervision, computers, street survival, and stress management.
Abstract
The introductory chapter on program development covers training strategies, goals and objectives, reasons for failure, training equipment, budgeting, how to obtain management's support, and home study courses. Next described is a field officer training course designed to help new officers make a smooth transition from theory to the realities of the streets. Among the areas considered are selection of trainers and evaluations. The text details steps in developing a supervisory training program and outlines a course for field training officers. Instructor selection, teaching methods, and simulation exercises are discussed. Other training programs explained in the text address technical areas: the use of video equipment and video production; purchasing a computer and training personnel in its use; first aid; firearms, including deadly force decisionmaking; and driving skills. Other chapters cover survival training, stress management, and physical fitness. Tables, sample forms, checklists, photographs, references, and index.
