Abstract
A description of the history of law enforcement explains its routine and hazardous functions, its origins in medieval England, and its origins and development in South Dakota. A discussion of more recent developments in South Dakota focuses on two State law enforcement agencies: the law enforcement division, later known as the division of criminal investigation, and the highway patrol. Also discussed are the Peace Officers' Association and the role of politics in law enforcement agencies. An examination of contemporary developments focuses on political decisions, the role of the FBI, law enforcement on Indian reservations, and recent changes. A description of technology in law enforcement covers communications equipment and techniques, transportation, weapons, crime control, and criminal investigation. Recruitment, training, working conditions, professional standards, and the challenges facing law enforcement agencies today are also covered. Narratives describe 17 significant events in the history of law enforcement in South Dakota. Photographs, data tables, an index, and appendixes presenting the names of governors, attorneys general, and law enforcement officials in the State are supplied.
