Abstract
This pocket-sized handbook is intended to provide police officers with a handy reference to rules of police practice under the United States Constitution. Citations to cases from which the rules and statements are derived are provided at the end of the discussion on each subject. Since this guide focuses strictly on United States Supreme Court decisions, it provides information only on what is permitted, required or forbidden under the United States Constitution. Stricter standards may be imposed by local ordinances, departmental regulations and State and local court interpretations of State constitutions. Blank pages are provided at the end of each subject so that officers may makes notes about deviations in their local requirements. The substantive material in the manual is divided into 10 procedural areas including: confrontation of suspect; stop and frisk; identifications; arrest; search incident to arrest; interrogation; search and seizure; surveillance and preservation of evidence; entrapment and special requirements for disabled persons.
