These 10 essays develop the view that law is a dynamic entity that both causes and changes social events, rather than a set of abstract rules that are largely impervious to the changing social climate.
Abstract
Individual papers consider a wide range of social and political phenomena of contemporary significance and examine the variety of ways in which the law has been used as a technique of social change, the effects of the law's use in these areas, and the consequences for our views of the law. The topics covered include the use of the law by the Thatcher government in Great Britain in the last decade, the effect of legal regulation on poverty, the regulation of financial markets, and the role of law in the provision of welfare services. Other papers consider the importance of international trends and developments in the development of financial services and media law, legal services and legal procedures in the 1990's, law in relation to Northern Ireland, environmental regulations, and the European Community of 1992.
