THIS PAPER DISCUSSES A BURGLAR ALARM SYSTEM DESIGN APPROACH THAT TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE PROBLEMS OF COST AND FALSE ALARMS IDENTIFIED IN LEAA SPONSORED STUDIES.
Abstract
LEAA FUNDED THIS STUDY TO DEVELOP A RESIDENTIAL AND SMALL-BUSINESS BURGLAR ALARM SYSTEM (BAS) AS AN ATTEMPT TO MITIGATE EXISTING BURGLAR ALARM SYSTEM PROBLEMS, I.E., HIGH COSTS THAT ARE INFLATED BY INSTALLATION AND EQUIPMENT, AND OWNER-INDUCED FALSE ALARMS. THE ULTIMATE PURPOSE IS TO DEVELOP THE NECESSARY TECHNOLOGY SO THAT INDUSTRY CAN MANUFACTURE AND MARKET IMPROVED SYSTEMS THEREBY HELPING TO CURB FAST-RISING BURGLARY STATISTICS. THE MAJORITY OF INSTALLATION COSTS INCURRED WHEN INDIVIDUAL DETECTORS ARE WIRED TO A CENTRAL PROCESSOR OR CONTROL UNIT CAN BE REDUCED BY USING THE EXISTING HOUSEHOLD POWER LINES TO TRANSMIT ALARM, STATUS, AND CONTROL SIGNALS. THE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE INITIAL EQUIPMENT PROCUREMENT CAN BE DECREASED BY DEVELOPING LARGE SCALE INTEGRATION (LIS) CIRCUITRY TO PERFORM THE REQUIRED LOGIC, STATUS-KEEPING, AND CONTROL FUNCTIONS (THE SAME TECHNOLOGY USED TO DRASTICALLY REDUCE THE COSTS OF POPULAR HAND-HELD CALCULATORS). EXTREMELY SOPHISTICATED ELECTRONIC CIRCUITRY CAN BE PLACED ON A SINGLE INTEGRATED CIRCUIT OR 'CHIP,' THAT CAN BE PRODUCED IN QUANTITY FOR A TINY FRACTION OF EQUIVALENT DISCRETE COMPOUND CIRCUITS. FALSE ALARMS CAN BE HANDLED BY MINIMIZING AND OPTIMIZING THE USER INTERFACE WITH THE SYSTEM. RESULTS HAVE SHOWN THE FEASIBILITY OF DEVELOPING A BURGLAR ALARM SYSTEM WHICH MEETS ALL THE LEAA REQUIREMENTS INCLUDING THE DIFFICULT 'PROLIFERATIONS' REQUIREMENT. THE SYSTEM SOFTWARE FOR THE INTEL 8080 MICROPROCESSOR CAN BE EASILY CHANGED AS MAY BE REQUIRED AFTER FIELD TESTS. A PRODUCTION VERSION OF THE SYSTEM MAY BE IMPLEMENTED WITH ONE OF THE RECENTLY AVAILABLE (LESS THAN $5 IN QUANTITY) MICROPROCESSORS ON A SINGLE CHIP. ADDITIONALLY, EFFORT MAY BE EXPENDED IN THE FUTURE TO LSI THE BAS INTRASYSTEM COMMUNICATIONS AND TO DESIGN PACKAGING SUITABLE FOR HIGH-VOLUME PRODUCTION. ONCE THE SYSTEM IS FULLY DEVELOPED, LEAA WILL TRANSFER THE TECHNOLOGY TO INDUSTRY FOR THEIR MANUFACTURING AND MARKETING. SYSTEM DIAGRAMS AND REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED. (MHP)
