A fundraising expert presents workshop participants with guidelines for initiating a comprehensive fundraising plan for community crime prevention programs and encourages them to work out its details as a workshop exercise.
Abstract
The most important initial step is a clear and succinct statement of program purpose, without which a fundraising campaign cannot proceed. If a program has difficulty stating its purpose, staff should consult with the board and resolve this basic point. Other points to clarify are how the program relates to its parent organization and how the money will be divided between the central and satellite organizations. Early planning should also concern material to be prepared and the people to be involved. Fundraising chairmen must be informed about the programs, since their lack of knowledge could damage their credibility. During the brainstorming session participants list potential donors in their respective communities and suggest what directions to take in seeking appeals for donations of $1,000, $500, and $100 or less.
