An experienced fundraiser discusses how community groups can use benefits to raise funds and the planning that is required.
Abstract
Benefits used to raise funds include theatre parties, house tours, picnics, community fairs or markets, rummage sales, testimonial dinners, and run-a-thons and walk-a-thons. A benefit that has wide public appeal is the most rewarding in terms of obtaining money for the organization. Benefits should be planned well in advance, with attention paid to potential conflicts with other organizations' events. A benefits calendar for the year, with about six benefits in all, is helpful. The dollar amount that each benefit should yield must be figured in advance. Each benefit should have a different chairperson in charge of its planning and operation.
