This paper describes the California Identification System (CAL-ID), a regional law enforcement project of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties featuring a name index, automated fingerprint processing system, image retrieval system, and a remote access network.
Abstract
It explains the cooperative agreement between the two counties regarding funding for equipment, personnel, and administration of the project through Remote Access Network (RAN) boards from each county. The operation of the automated fingerprint system (AFIS) system is detailed covering forensic laboratory procedures, fingerprint card processing, data base entry, the matching process, and the use of a facsimile machine. Although the AFIS mainframe computer is housed in San Bernardino, input stations are located in each county. AFIS network is economically justified through its worth in reducing crime through identification of suspects, solving old cases, and protecting others from false arrest. Future plans include identification through an electronic photographic imaging system and DNA testing. Photographs.
