Annotation
This videotape is directed primarily to youth and uses the voices and stories of violent juvenile offenders, their victims, and adults to explain the types of actions that are illegal and the impacts of violence on the lives of both the perpetrators and their victims.
Abstract
The narrator notes that he learned to channel his aggression and anger into constructive activities such as basketball and emphasizes that violence harms the victim, the family, friends, and the perpetrator. Youth who have committed violent crimes and are now in detention describe how their impulsive actions and escalation of minor disputes have led to their lengthy periods of incarceration and even life sentences. They also explain the other types of offenses they committed and how their use of alcohol and other drugs contributed to their violence. Victims of rape and firearms violence describe the lasting impacts of the violence on their lives. A police officer states that wisdom is more important than courage and that avoiding confrontations that can lead to violence is crucial. Statistics are also presented on juvenile delinquency, juvenile violence, and juvenile detention.
