REVIEW OF THE EXPERIENCES, ACCOMPLISHMENTS, AND PROSPECTS OF THE PRISON-BASED CLINIC AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS SCHOOL OF LAW TO PROVIDE INFORMATION TO LAW FACULTIES INTERESTED IN ESTABLISHING PRISON LAW CLINICS.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM WAS INITIATED IN 1965 TO PROVIDE FIELD EXPERIENCE TO LAW STUDENTS THROUGH PROVIDING COUNSELING SERVICES TO THE 4,000 INMATES AT THE FEDERAL AND STATE CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES CONVENIENT TO THE SCHOOL. THE HISTORY OF PROJECT FUNDING AND PROGRESS IS DESCRIBED. METHODS OF SELECTING AND GRADING STUDENTS, PROCESSING PRISONER APPLICATIONS, INTERVIEWING CLIENTS, AND ADMINISTERING THE PROJECT ARE ANALYZED. THE TYPES OF CASES HANDLED ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. PROGRAM IMPACT AND CONTINUITY PROBLEMS ARE ASSESSED. THE PROJECT'S FUTURE IS BRIEFLY DISCUSSED.
