The article discusses some of the trends in policing that will require officers in the 21st Century to be more sensitive to their crime prevention role and more responsive to functions associated with community service.

Abstract

Three approaches toward meeting future community policing needs include collaboration between justice agencies in addressing specific crime problems and targeting serious repeat offenders; the increasing use of private police and security officers to assist in crime control efforts; and the utilization of police reserves and cadet programs stressing higher education. Some of the legal issues related to policing that are discussed here include domestic violence calls, civil liability in policing, and limits placed upon police by the exclusionary rule. 48 references
