SURVEY STUDY OF AN EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA COUNTY IN THE RURAL POVERTY BELT.
Abstract
THE PRIMARY PURPOSES ARE TO INVESTIGATE THE TYPES OF PROBLEMS, METHODS OF RESOLUTION, UTILIZATION OF SERVICES AND THE PERCEPTION OF LEGAL OR OTHER REMEDIES COMMON TO THE RURAL POVERTY GROUP. TYPICAL PROBLEMS RANGE FROM EMPLOYMENT CONCERNS, SUCH AS BENEFIT DENIALS AND WAGE COLLECTION, TO DOMESTIC CONCERNS, SUCH AS OBTAINING WELFARE BENEFITS AND DIVORCES. THE SURVEY STUDY WAS CONDUCTED THROUGH THE ADMINISTRATION OF QUESTIONNAIRES TO A SAMPLE GROUP OF RESIDENTS, FOLLOWED BY UNSTRUCTURED INTERVIEWS WITH COMMUNITY LEADERS AND SERVICE AGENCIES TO ASSESS THEIR ABILITY TO ASSIST IN PROBLEM SOLVING BY EITHER THEIR OWN EFFORTS OR APPROPRIATE REFERRALS. FINALLY, THE ACTIVITY OF THE LOCAL BAR IN SERVING THE NEEDS OF THE POOR WAS EVALUATED, AND SUGGESTIONS ARE OFFERED FOR THE PROBLEM AREAS MOST IN NEED OF ATTENTION. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
