This article describes various impact projectile system technologies to assist law enforcement agencies in determining the best less-lethal impact round to procure to meet their agency’s need.
Abstract
Impact rounds are generally deployed in cases where officers are justified in using impact energy. Common operational scenarios involve armed and/or violent people affected by mental illness, suicidal subjects, or those who for whatever reason are found armed, non-compliant, and not overtly assaultive. A large number of law enforcement agencies nationwide deploy 12-gauge, non-square, beanbag rounds in the field for a variety of reasons, predominantly due to access to shotguns. The 12-gauge shotgun offers a cost-effective, 8-shot impact projectile system, that comes with 8 hours of training. However, a select group of more advanced and specialized technologies fills unique operational voids and enhances the capabilities of those agencies willing to commit the time, personnel, and financial resources to having the best impact projectile system available. This article describes several available impact projectile systems that include: the Pepperball system, FN 303, and large caliber munitions, such as the ARWEN 37, SAGE SL6, and Penn Arms SL65.
