Youth action groups in England encourage young people and adults to work together to prevent crime and make communities safer; started by young people, the groups are usually school-based and involve a wide range of activities.
Abstract
Surveys indicate that young people worry about their personal safety, see themselves more as potential victims than as offenders, prefer their peers over adults when seeking help, and generally want to become involved in crime prevention projects. Five main elements are involved in setting up an effective youth action group: identifying the problem, developing an action plan, assessing available resources, building a strong team of young people, and evaluating results. Youth action groups in England have become involved in drug and alcohol abuse, theft and shoplifting, bullying, vandalism and graffiti, personal safety, and car crime projects. A brief description of these projects is provided.
