Using commentary by U.S. Justice Department officials, local law enforcement officers, and victim service providers, as well as case examples, this video portrays the nature and severity of human trafficking and what must be done to counter it in the United States.
Abstract
Attorney General John Ashcroft speaks on the prevalence and impact of the trafficking in persons across national borders by and to persons who force and coerce them into prostitution, other sexual services, and slave labor. He sets this crime as a priority for Federal law enforcement agencies in cooperation with State and local law enforcement and associated agencies. The video features criminal cases in which vulnerable Hispanic immigrants seeking a better life in the United States have been confined by their traffickers and repeatedly raped. Also mentioned are "sweat shops," in which trafficked persons are coerced and intimidated to work for low wages under poor working conditions. Law enforcement officers comment on the importance of proactive efforts by multiagency task forces to detect and respond effectively to all forms of human trafficking. A representative of a nongovernmental victims-services agency comments on the importance of providing counseling and medical services to victims of human trafficking.
