TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF LIBRARY THEFT DETECTION AND BOOK SECURITY SYSTEMS HAVE INCREASED THE FEASIBILITY OF SUCH SYSTEMS IN LIBRARIES OF VARYING SIZES AND NEEDS. A NUMBER OF SYSTEMS ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract
THE 3M COMPANY NOW OFFERS TWO SYSTEMS UNDER THE 'TATTLE TAPE' BRAND NAME. THE MODEL 1850 AND THE MODEL 1250 ARE ELECTROMAGNETIC SYSTEMS USING CONCEALABLE TAPES TO PROTECT MATERIALS. THE MODEL 1850 SELLS FOR $4,800 TO $6,100, AND PROVIDES A GREATER RANGE OF COVERAGE THAN THE MODEL 1250; IT ALSO FEATURES A PATRON COUNTER. SENSING SCREENS ON THE MODEL 1250, SELLING FOR $3,100, PROVIDE LESS COVERAGE. BOTH UNITS ARE LESS PRONE TO FALSE ALARMS, AND BOOK-CHECK UNITS (SENSITIZING/ DESENSITIZING UNITS) ARE AVAILABLE IN TWO PRICE RANGES. THE CHECKPOINT MARK II SYSTEM, USING A WIDE-BAND SWEPT RADIO FREQUENCY FOR DETECTION, HAS UNDERGONE A NUMBER OF TECHNOLOGICAL REFINEMENTS WHICH INCLUDE A HANDHELD DEVICE FOR INSERTING CHECKLABELS, SIMPLIFIED INSTALLATION, INCREASED RELIABILITY, CAPABILITY FOR PROTECTING AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS. AND A COMPACT PLEXIGLASS SENSING SCREEN SYSTEM. THE GAYLORD/MAGNAVOX BOOK SECURITY SYSTEM CLAIMS TO BE VIRTUALLY FREE OF FALSE ALARMS AND SELLS FOR $7,300. DETECTOR TAPE IS AVAILABLE IN 500-FOOT ROLLS WHICH ALLOW STRIPS TO BE CUT TO THE NEEDED SIZE, ALLOWING GREATER ECONOMY. KNOGO CORPORATION HAS INTRODUCED AN INTEGRATED CIRCULATION CONTROL AND BOOK SECURITY SYSTEM, WHILE CONTINUING TO WORK ON A MASS RESENSITIZER THAT WOULD SPEED PROCESSING TIME. SENTRONIC IS WORKING ON A PLAN TO OFFER LIBRARIES A WIDE VARIETY OF SYSTEMS FOR INDIVIDUAL LIBRARY NEEDS. THROUGH MORE ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT SYSTEMS ARE NOW AVAILABLE TO LIBRARIES. SYSTEM SELECTION SHOULD BE BASED ON NEEDS, FINANCIAL RESOURCES, AND AVAILABILITY OF FAST AND LOCAL REPAIR SERVICE. (JAP)
