THIS REPORT PRESENTS A SUMMARY OF THE FIFTH YEAR OF THE LINCOLN-LANCASTER COUNTY CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION PROGRAM IN NEBRASKA ALONG WITH AN EVALUATION OF THE 5-YEAR PROGRAM.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM'S GOALS INCLUDE GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF THE LAW AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, REDUCTION IN THE NUMBER OF CRIMINAL CAREERS, INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE CAREERS, MORE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF CITIZEN RESPONSIBILITY IN REPORTING CRIMES, AND A BETTER COMMUNITY. THERE WERE 2,481 PRESENTATIONS GIVEN BY SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS IN 1976 TO AN AUDIENCE OF 64,822. THE OFFICERS WERE INVOLVED WITH AN INCREASING NUMBER OF COUNSELING SITUATIONS AND INDEPTH LAW ENFORCEMENT CAREER INTERVIEWS. TWO OFFICERS WERE ADDED TO THE PROGRAM: A MALE ASSIGNED TO A JUNIOR HIGH AREA AND A FEMALE WITH EXPERTISE IN CHILD ABUSE/NEGLECT, RAPE, AND RUNAWAY GIRLS. THERE WERE 34 IN ATTENDENCE AT THE FOURTH ANNUAL LAW EDUCATION SUMMER WORKSHOP FOR EDUCATORS. THE 5-YEAR PROGRAM HAS BEEN AIDED BY 22 PUBLIC AGENCIES, WHILE MONTHLY BULLETINS CIRCULATE TO SCHOOL PRINCIPALS FROM SEPTEMBER TO MAY. THIS REPORT CONCLUDES THAT THE COMMUNITY HAS EXPRESSED STRONG SUPPORT WITH SUBSEQUENT CONTINUED LOCAL FUNDING, YOUNG CITIZENS AND ADULTS ARE UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATING THE LAW MORE THROUGH THE PROGRAM, AND STUDENT ATTITUDES TOWARD LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS HAVE BECOME MORE POSITIVE SINCE THE PROGRAM BEGAN. A RETIRED OFFICER STATED THAT SCHOOL PROBLEMS SUCH AS FIGHTING AND TRESPASSING HAVE BEEN REDUCED 50 PERCENT.
