This article presents a directory of more than 150 criminal justice on-line resources.
Abstract
The resources pertain to a variety of criminal justice topics, including employment opportunities; crime statistics and alerts; anonymous crime reporting; court opinions, calendars, rules, and jury instructions; missing children; and training opportunities. These and many other resources are readily available to any criminal justice professional with a computer, a modem, and telecommunication software. Entries include bulletin boards, forums on commercial services, news groups, and mailing lists, as well as specific databases and publications. The first component of each entry is the name of the resources; in most cases this is the name of a bulletin board. The second component identifies the type of entry: BBS, definition, forum, news group, mailing list, network, publication, database clearinghouse, and other. The third component is a description of the information available, with emphasis on aspects of interest to criminal justice professionals. If preregistration is required, this is noted in the description, and contact information is provided. The next section of an entry describes the method or methods available for accessing the information resource (e.g., direct dial, Telnet, FTP, etc.) Most entries are for bulletin boards, which can be reached only by direct dial call; a telephone number is provided for these entries. Other types of resources often require a different approach such as running a program or entering a series of commands; in such cases all of the required steps are indicated. Information on logon names and passwords is provided when a specific name or password is required to access the system. 7 references
