DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS OF LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENT AND SCHOOL SYSTEM INTERACTION AND COOPERATION IN FOURTEEN SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN ILLINOIS A PROPOSED SET OF GUIDELINES WHICH POLICE AND SCHOOL COULD USE IN THEIR RELATIONSHIP.
Abstract
THE SOURCES OF DATA IN THIS STUDY WERE FOURFOLD: (1) PERSONAL STRUCTURED AND UNSTRUCTURED INTERVIEWS WITH SCHOOL AND POLICE PERSONNEL; (2) QUESTIONNAIRE REPLIES FROM SUPERINTENDENTS OF SCHOOLS AND CHIEFS OF POLICE; (3) POLICE AND SCHOOL JOURNALS, PAMPHLETS, BOOKS, AND OTHER MISCELLANEOUS PUBLICATIONS; AND (4) LETTERS AND MISCELLANEOUS LITERATURE RECEIVED FROM STATE DEPARTMENTS OF EDUCATION, STATE, NATIONAL, AND INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS, COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTS OF POLICE SCIENCE AND ADMINISTRATION, AND OTHERS. THE STUDY COVERED THE FOLLOWING AREAS: COMMUNICATION PATTERNS, POLICIES AND AGREEMENTS, JUVENILE DELINQUENCY PREVENTION AND CONTROL, INTRA-SCHOOL PROBLEMS, IN-SCHOOL INTERVIEWS, IN-SCHOOL APPREHENSIONS, STUDENT-ADULT PROBLEMS, TRUANCY, CROWD CONTROL AT SCHOOL FUNCTIONS, MONEY TRANSPORTATION, SAFETY EDUCATION, SCHOOL RECORDS, TRAFFIC CONTROL, AND CLASSROOM SITUATIONS. ALSO INCLUDED WERE ADULT CROSSING GUARDS, PATROLLING SCHOOL PROPERTY, SCHOOL SAFETY PATROLS, POLICE PRESENTATIONS TO PARENTS OR SCHOOL PERSONNEL, SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS, OPENING DAY PROVISIONS, STUDENT OBSERVER AND TOUR PROGRAMS, AUTHORITY AND LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY OVERLAP, AND INFORMATION AND AID REQUESTS.
