A STUDY OF THE PRESENT STRUCTURE AND OPERATION OF THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM, THE TYPES OF OFFENDERS RECEIVED INTO THE SYSTEM EACH YEAR, AND THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PRISON POPULATION.
Abstract
THE PRESENT STRUCTURE OF THE ENGLISH PRISON SYSTEM, THE TYPES OF INSTITUTIONS WHICH THE SYSTEM NOW CONTAINS, AND THE POLICIES WHICH GOVERN THE TRANSFERS OF PRISONERS OF VARIOUS TYPES BETWEEN THESE INSTITUTIONS ARE FIRST DESCRIBED. RESULTS OF A SURVEY OF 167 MALE PRISONERS OF A LARGE LOCAL PRISON - WINSON GREEN, IN BIRMINGHAM - ARE REPORTED. INCLUDED IN THIS POPULATION PROFILE IS INFORMATION ON THE SOCIAL BACKGROUNDS AND CRIMINAL HISTORIES OF THE INMATES. THE COMPOSITION OF THE POPULATIONS OF OTHER TYPES OF PRISONS ARE ALSO REPORTED. CONSEQUENCES OF THE 1967 CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACT ON THE OPERATIONS OF THE BRITISH PENAL SYSTEM ARE EXPLORED, AND POSSIBLE CHANGES IN THE ENGLISH PRISON SYSTEM ARE CONSIDERED. THE APPENDIXES INCLUDE MATHEMATICAL MODELS OF PENAL SYSTEMS, METHODOLOGY OF THE WINSON GREEN SURVEY, AND CASE STUDIES OF LONG-TERM RESIDENTS OF WINSON GREEN. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
