This document contains information on Local System Assessment (LSA) by the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) Jails Division and an LSA application.
Abstract
An LSA entails assessment of a requesting jurisdiction's criminal justice system, including a review of the existing incarceration, law enforcement, and court components; and recommendations for feasible new programs. All jurisdictions may benefit from an LSA, particularly those that are planning expansion or procedural alteration. Some working premises of the NIC Jails Division are coordination among criminal justice system components, and development of local solutions to problems. The following checklists are provided: Requesting Agency Tasks and Responsibilities; Jail Assessment; Criminal Justice System Analysis; Pre-Trial Options; Intermediate Sanctions; Local Government and Community; LSA Community Meeting; and Required and Recommended Attendance. The application includes questions pertaining to jail assessment, alternative incarceration options, the criminal justice system, the community, and plans for new jails (if applicable). 4 exhibits
