Instruction in the police use of the transport wrist lock with noncompliant subjects explains the techniques portrayed in 32 photographs.
Abstract
Six photos show why it is safer to apply the wrist lock with the officer's gun-side toward rather than away from the subject. Twelve photos show how to get into the escort position. The first step is to assess the subject for potential resistance. The escort position is for subjects that have shown no aggressive behavior. The quick and smooth application of an escort position before a subject decides to resist increases the options for control, including the use of the transport wrist lock. Handcuffing the suspect is portrayed in eight photos. Depending upon the suspect's level of resistance and the officer's perceptions of the circumstance, a subject may be either handcuffed in the standing position or after having been taken to the ground. The officer should be prepared to escalate or de- escalate the level of force as the situation warrants. The handling of violent resistance is portrayed in six photos. This involves taking the subject to the ground and then cuffing him.
