THIS PAPER OUTLINES AN APPROACH FOR STUDYING POSTRELEASE BEHAVIORS, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENTS OF EX-OFFENDERS USING PRELIMINARY DATA ON THE FOLLOW-UP OF 173 INMATES RELEASED OR PAROLED FROM DRAPER CORRECTIONAL CENTER.
Abstract
EVALUATED WAS THE IMPACT OF INSTITUTIONAL MANPOWER DEVELOPMENT TRAINING. INMATES RELEASED BETWEEN JANUARY 1969 AND SEPTEMBER 1970 WERE STUDIED THROUGH APRIL 1971 UTILIZING FACE-TO-FACE INTERVIEWS 3, 6, 12, AND 18 MONTHS AFTER RELEASE. THE DATA COLLECTION INSTRUMENTS USED WERE A 326-ITEM INTERVIEW GUIDE, THE ENVIRONMENTAL DEPRIVATION SCALE, THE MALADAPTIVE BEHAVIOR RECORD, AND THE WEEKLY ACTIVITY RECORD. TRAINING WAS SHOWN TO HAVE AN EFFECT ON OFFENDERS AFTER RELEASE, BUT CEASED TO BE A SIGNIFICANT FACTOR IN RECIDIVISM REDUCTION AFTER 12-18 MONTHS. DATA INSTRUMENTS SUPPLIED INFORMATION ON THE RECIDIVIST'S LACK OF SUPPORT FOR POSITIVE BEHAVIOR IN HIS POSTRELEASE ENVIRONMENT AND SUBSTANTIATED MALADAPTIVE COPING BEHAVIOR. TABULAR DATA IS INCLUDED.
