This brief article provides commentary on the address by Holtzworth-Munroe and Meehan.

Abstract

This document is a comment on the research conducted and presented by Holtzworth-Munroe and Meehan. The author notes that they provide an excellent example of programmatic research, and that they review an influential taxonomy of men who are maritally violent that posits three types: family only; dysphoric or borderline; and generally violent and antisocial (GVA). The research goes on to address some important basic issues regarding the robustness of these types, their stability across time, and the underlying nature of these types. Finally, they close with suggestions for further developmental research and a call for matching offenders to treatment. The author states that some of the developmental work on men who are maritally violent has already been done, and that this work holds the key to successful intervention. This article discusses an address by Holtzworth-Munroe and Meehan, made in 2003 and presented at “Toward a National Research Agenda on Violence Against Women.” References
