Abstract
CRIME RATES IN THIS SUMMARY ARE BASED ON A POPULATION OF 10,000 RATHER THAN 100,0000 AS IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA AND FBI REPORTS. POPULATION AND AREA FIGURES COVER THE AREA OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY. FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO CRIME IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY INCLUDE CLIMATE; MULTIPLE LEVELS OF ECONOMIC STATUS; RESIDENT AND TRANSIENT POPULATION; COMPOSITION OF THE POPULATION IN REGARD TO AGE AND SEX; NUMBER OF PUBLIC EDUCATIONAL, RECREATIONAL, AND RELIGIOUS FACILITIES; PUBLIC ATTITUDE TOWARD LAW ENFORCEMENT; NUMBER OF POLICE EMPLOYEES PER UNIT OF POPULATION; AND POLICIES OF THE PROSECUTING OFFICIALS AND COURTS. EXTENSIVE STATISTICAL DATA ARE GIVEN FOR ALL ASPECTS OF THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT, INCLUDING SALARY ORDINANCE POSITIONS FOR 1977-78, DEPARTMENT CRIMINAL ACTIVITY SUMMARY, CRIME RATE COMPARISONS FOR PART I OFFENSES FOR A 5-YEAR AND 10-YEAR PERIOD, DEPARTMENT CASES HANDLED AND ARREST STATISTICS FOR ADULTS AND JUVENILES, CASE ASSIGNMENTS, AND A TRAFFIC ACCIDENT AND ENFORCEMENT SUMMARY.
