Abstract
THE PROJECT LEADING TO THE PUBLICATION OF THIS BOOK WAS INITIATED BY THE LOS ANGELES SUPERIOR COURT IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT FOR THE PURPOSE OF PROVIDING A VALID AND EXHAUSTIVE LIST OF DRUG-RELATED AND ALCOHOL-RELATED WORDS FOR USE IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. THE METHODOLOGY USED INCLUDED THE STUDY OF TECHNICAL DICTIONARIES, SLANG DICTIONARIES FOR THE VARIOUS REGIONAL DIALECTS (CALIFORNIA, TEXAS, CUBA, AND OTHER SPANISH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES), AND VARIOUS NARCOTICS GLOSSARIES DEVELOPED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT AND OTHER PUBLIC AGENCIES. THE MANUAL IS INTENDED FOR THE USE OF COURT INTERPRETERS AND OTHERS ASSOCIATED WITH THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, AND SPANS THE ENTIRE RANGE OF TERMINOLOGY FROM SCIENTIFIC TERMS TO STREET SLANG. THE BOOK CONTAINS SECTIONS DEALING WITH A GENERAL GLOSSARY OF DRUG TERMINOLOGY; COCAINE, HEROIN, LSD, AND MARIJUANA; SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BEING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS OR WITHDRAWAL; EYES AND PUPILS, WALK, AND SPEECH; SEARCH AND SEIZURE; ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES AND RELATED MATTERS AND SOBRIETY TESTS. INFORMATION IS ALSO INCLUDED ON GASCHROMATOGRAPH INTOXIMETER; AND MEASURES AND QUANTITIES OFTEN USED IN NARCOTIC TRANSACTIONS.
