The purpose of this circular is to standardize senior crime prevention information presented by the Los Angeles Police Department at community crime prevention meetings.
Abstract
The circular is intended to assist the police personnel who conduct such meetings to impart basic crime prevention techniques to help seniors achieve a greater degree of safety and security. Three general rules are outlined for the promotion of senior crime prevention. First, be alert and aware so as not to be taken by surprise; second, walk confidently and do not show fear; third, if a place or situation is uncomfortable, leave immediately and get help if necessary. Recommendations are offered for improving security at home, in the car, while using public transportation, and while using an automated teller machine. Recommendations are offered for what a person should do during and after being criminally victimized and measures that can be taken to protect income. Information is provided on fraud and con-games, elder abuse, and crimes in convalescent homes. The latter involve physical abuse, neglect, sexual assault, emotional/psychological abuse, and financial abuse. Suggested criteria are offered for selecting a convalescent home. Addresses and phone numbers are listed for senior multipurpose centers in Los Angeles County.
