THIS STUDY ON THE DEVELOPMENT STATUS OF A FIREARMS TRAINING PROGRAM, DATED FEBRUARY 3, 1976, WAS CONDUCTED FOR THE LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT, WHOSE 4,500 SWORN OFFICERS SERVE 2,809,596 PERSONS ON 469 SQUARE MILES.
Abstract
THE DEFT PROGRAM PROVIDES SIMULATIONS OF STRESSFUL SITUATIONS IN WHICH AN OFFICER SHOULD OR SHOULD NOT USE HIS WEAPON. IN THE EVENT THAT HE SHOULD AND DOES, THE SYSTEM INDICATES WHETHER OR NOT HE 'HIT' HIS TARGET WITH A WAX BULLET. THE SURVEY FOUND THAT THE SYSTEM WAS NOT OPERATIONAL DUE TO SEVERAL FACTORS, ONE OF WHICH WAS THAT THE COMPUTER WAS NOT HOOKED UP. FURTHERMORE, THE WAX PROJECTILES WERE DEEMED UNSATISFACTORY AND A 'LIGHT' GUN WAS SUGGESTED TO REPLACE THEM. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE GIVEN ON HOW TO COMPLETE THE SYSTEM AND MAKE IT OPERATIONAL.
