DESCRIBES THE NATURE AND METHODS OF SUBVERSIVE GROUPS, EXAMINES EFFECTIVE COUNTERINSURGENCY AND PEACE-KEEING OPERATIONS, AND DISCUSSES HOW AN ARMY MIGHT PREPARE ITSELF FOR SUCH TASKS.
Abstract
THE EVOLUTION AND STEP-BY-STEP INTENT OF A TYPICAL INSURGENT CAMPAIGN IS ANALYZED IN ITS VIOLENT AND NONVIOLENT ASPECTS. PICKING UP ON A CAUSE THAT ELICITS THE COMMITMENT OF A SUBSTANTIAL PORTION OF THE CITIZENRY IS CONSIDERED THE HEART OF A GROWING SUBVERSIVE PROGRAM. COUNTERINSURGENCY IS SEEN TO DEAL BOTH WITH THE CAUSES OF THE UNREST UPON WHICH SUBVERSION THRIVES AS WELL AS THWARTING THE LEADERSHIP SEEKING A MORE RADICAL REVOLUTION THAT GOES BEYOND A PARTICULAR GRIEVANCE. INTELLIGENCE OPERATIONS ARE VIEWED AS PROVIDING THE BACKGROUND DATA NECESSARY FOR PLANNING TACTICAL OPERATIONS THAT INVOLVE EFFECTIVE CONTACT WITH THE ENEMY. SUCH AN APPROACH IS ILLUSTRATED BY ACTUAL EXAMPLES. THE TYPE OF UNITS AND EQUIPMENT NEEDED FOR COUNTERINSURGENCY IS DISCUSSED, ALONG WITH THE SPECIALIZED PERSONNEL REQUIRED. THE UNIQUE FUNCTION OF PEACE-KEEPING IS EXPLORED, AND THE PREPARATION AND TRAINING REQUIRED FOR EFFECTIVE COUNTERINSURGENT AND PEACE-KEEPING OPERATIONS IS PRESENTED.
