The program, growth, goals, and funding of M-2 Sponsors, a California program that matches community volunteers on a one-to-one basis with forgotten inmates, are described in this annual report.
Abstract
The report contains a map of California prison institutions and active M-2 matches as of January 1, 1981. A total of 1,308 new matches between volunteer sponsors and prisoners were made during 1980, and sponsors made 11,772 prison visits. The impact of the M-2 program on inmate recidivism is described, including the results of a 3-year study conducted by the California Youth Authority Research Division. In that study, wards who were matched to sponsors were found to be doing 34 percent better on parole than wards without sponsors. The report also includes photographs of inmates and their sponsors; a letter written by an inmate about the M-2 Sponsors; a description of sponsor meetings and workshops; special events conducted by M-2 Sponsors for inmates such as a banquet and a fundraising foot race; comments by correctional administrators; and a list of members of the M-2 board of directors, M-2 Sponsors staff, and the M-2 (volunteer) support staff.
