GUIDELINES FOCUS ON THOSE SITUATIONS IN WHICH THE NEED FOR DEADLY FORCE ARISES AS THE POLICE PERFORM ESSENTIALLY ROUTINE DAILY TASKS - PRIMARILY ONE TO ONE SITUATIONS.
Abstract
MODEL GUIDELINES, WITH SUPPORTING COMMENTARY, ARE BASED ON STATUTORY AND CASE LAW, AS WELL AS ON THE OPINIONS OF RECOGNIZED AUTHORITIES IN THE FIELD. DEADLY FORCE, OR USE OF ANY WEAPON CAPABLE OF CAUSING DEATH OR SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, IS RESTRICTED TO SEVERAL WELL DEFINED SITUATIONS AND IS GOVERNED BY NUMEROUS OVERRIDING CONSIDERATIONS, SUCH AS THE DANGER TO BYSTANDERS, EVEN WHEN INITIAL CONSIDERATIONS ARE MET.
