THIS ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY GROUPS, 772 BOOKS, JOURNAL AND NEWSPAPER ARTICLES, AND OTHER PUBLISHED MATERIALS ON 'MAFIA' ACCORDING TO THEIR INTERPRETATION OF THE TERM.
Abstract
THE BIBLIOGRAPHY, WHICH WAS COMPILED AT THE INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY, CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY, ENGLAND, IS INTERNATIONAL IN SCOPE. IT LISTS BOTH ENGLISH AND FOREIGN-LANGUAGE REFERENCES AND SOME OF THE FORMER ARE ANNOTATED. ALL THE MATERIALS CITED WERE PUBLISHED PRIOR TO 1974. THE BIBLIOGRAPHY FOCUSES ON THE VARIETY OF MEANINGS AND INTERPRETATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE 'MAFIA'. THE LISTINGS ARE GROUPED BY THE MEANING AND INTERPRETATION CRITERIA IN THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES (1) MAFIA AS A CRIMINAL ORGANIZATION THAT OPERATES INTERNATIONALLY; (2) MAFIA AS AN IMPORT FROM ITALY THAT HAS BECOME THE MAIN FORCE IN ORGANIZED CRIME IN THE UNITED STATES; (3) MAFIA AS A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IN ORGANIZED CRIME IN THE UNITED STATES, BUT ONE THAT MAINTAINS LINKS WITH ITALIAN CRIMINALS; (4) MAFIA AS AN AMERICAN CRIMINAL PHENOMENON (INCLUDING REFERENCES TO THE MAFIA MYTH); (5) MAFIA AS A SICILIAN CRIMINAL SOCIETY, WITH ORGANIZATION AND RITUAL; (6) MAFIA AS A SICILIAN SUBCULTURE RESULTING FROM POVERTY, LACK OF SOCIAL REFORM, AND OTHER SOCIAL CONDITIONS; (7) MAFIA AS A 'STATE OF MIND' RATHER THAN AN ACTUAL ORGANIZATION; (8) MAFIA AS REPRESENTED IN THE ARTS (NOVELS, POEMS, PLAYS); AND (9) UNCLASSIFIED REFERENCES.
