This study examines the effect of the "Make My Day" law implemented in Colorado in 1985.
Abstract
The "Make My Day" law broadened the rules regarding the use of force against intruders in one's home. The first 23 cases that involved the use of the law as a defense are examined with an eye toward identifying flaws. The cases are categorized into love triangles, neighbor disputes, disputes among friends, disputes with the police, disputes among drug dealers, and landlord/tenant disputes. The state of the law is described before and after the passage of the "Make My Day" laws. A summary is provided of the problems that have arisen since the implementation of the law and recommendations that would fine tune the law to more accurately reflect the goals of the legislature. 53 references and 5 appendixes.
