This resource guide contains a compilation of input and ideas from the Corporation for National Service programs around the United States, the National Institute on Out-of-School Time (NIOST) research and training materials, and knowlege and experience of writers and contributors in order to help Corporation programs become more effectively involved in enhancing the quality of out-of-school time programs for young people ages 5 to 14.
Abstract
This guide contains information learned by NIOST during their conduct of national and regional, and targeted local training and networking events, implementation of a toll-free information hotline, phone consultations, tip sheets and packets of information on subjects relating to out-of-school time issues, and development of a peer advisory network. Topics covered include exploring the facts about children's out-of-school time programming, what is it and how is it important; understanding basic standards for a quality out-of-school time program; training members and volunteers to work in out-of-school time programs; understanding service learning, tip sheets with simple ideas to address important out-of-school topics; training materials on important out-of-school time issues; program profiles; and how to connect to additional out-of-school time and school age child care resources. A descriptive list of examples of out-of-school programs is included, and source references are noted.
