A FORMER WASHINGTON, D.C., POLICEWOMAN RECOUNTS HER EXPERIENCES ON THE FORCE BETWEEN 1968 AND 1975; HER PROGRESSION FROM ROOKIE IN THE JUVENILE DIVISION TO SERGEANT SUPERVISING SEVERAL MALE OFFICERS IS RELATED.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES HER ORIGINAL DUTIES IN THE JUVENILE SECTION, WHICH REQUIRED THE SKILLS OF A SOCIAL WORKER RATHER THAN A COP. AS THE WOMEN'S MOVEMENT PROGRESSED, THE CITY DECIDED TO INTEGRATE WOMEN INTO ALL THE DAILY FUNCTIONS OF THE POLICE FORCE. THE AUTHOR WAS ASSIGNED TO A SQUAD CAR PATROLLING THE CAPITAL'S STREETS AND RESPONDED TO TYPICAL CALLS SUCH AS BATTERED CHILDREN, HOLDUPS IN PROGRESS, RAPES, AND ROBBERIES. ENCOUNTERS WITH SEXISM ON THE FORCE ARE DESCRIBED, UP TO AND AFTER HER PROMOTION TO SERGEANT. THE BOOK PRESENTS THE STORY OF A COMPETENT COP WHO HAPPENS TO BE A WOMAN, AS WELL AS A VERY REAL SENSE OF THE HEROISM OF POLICE OFFICERS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED).
