DEVELOPMENTS IN THE STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF CONFINEMENT AND ISOLATION ON THE WAY MEN THINK AND BEHAVE, WITH SUGGESTIONS FOR METHODOLOGICAL IMPROVEMENTS.
Abstract
AN ACCOUNT IS GIVEN OF THE EFFECTS OF SENSORY DEPRIVATION ON INDIVIDUALS IN VARIOUS LABORATORY SET-UPS, A REVIEW OF CERTAIN FIELD STUDIES OF INDIVIDUALS IN UNDERGROUND CAVES AND ISOLATED FARMS IN NORTHERN NORWAY, FIELD STUDIES OF GROUPS UNDER INDIRECT OBSERVATION IN THE ANTARCTIC AND UNDER DIRECT OBSERVATION IN UNDERSEA EXPERIMENTS, AND THE ECOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS OF ISOLATION AND CONFINEMENT. THE ECOLOGICAL APPROACH TO INTERPERSONAL EXCHANGE EMPHASIZES TERRITORIAL BEHAVIOR AND GENERAL USE OF SPACE. THE LEGITIMACY OF APPLYING GENERAL, THEORETICAL MODELS TO PARTICULAR GROUPS IS QUESTIONED. THE FINAL ARTICLE IN THIS VOLUME TELLS OF ENCOURAGING SIGNS OF VALIDITY IN INVESTIGATIVE TECHNIQUES WHICH HAVE DEVELOPED GENERAL PRINCIPLES ABOUT MEN IN ISOLATION BY USING DIFFERENT METHODS ON DIFFERENT POPULATIONS. THIS MAY POINT TO THE USEFULNESS OF THIS WORK FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN THE EFFECTS OF ISOLATION OR CONFINEMENT ON PRISON INMATES.
