This article describes a 2-phase project of the National Center for State Courts and the National Judicial College regarding development of an educational program on effective trial management by judges at the State and local levels.
Abstract
The first phase of the project included organization of the faculty, development of a basis curriculum, and testing of the curriculum in different settings. The second phase involved refinement of the curriculum and institutionalization at the State and local levels. The curriculum is comprised of seven basic modules: trial in context; should judges manage trials; getting prepared; maintaining trial momentum; voir dire and jury selection; selected trial management problems; and implementing trial management techniques. Overall judges are committed to effective management using suggested ideas and techniques as evidenced by participation in program seminars on improved trial management practices. 13 references
