Abstract
The first chapter discusses the special role of the supervisor in law enforcement, with attention to the importance of the first-level supervisor, transition from worker to supervisor, skills needed by a supervisor, and basic supervisory responsibilities. A chapter on the managerial functions of the law enforcement supervisor addresses formal managerial authority, the delegation process, span of control, chain of command, and unity of command, as well as management by objectives. Separate chapters cover the various skills and functions of police supervisors. These include leadership, communication, interviewing, performance evaluation, human relations, training, and discipline. Guidance is also provided on the handling of complaints from subordinates, the management of complaints against employees, and problem solving. Remaining chapters discuss the supervising of field operations, the use of physical force, and the promotion process. Each chapter contains review tests, footnotes, and suggested readings.
