This text provides a comprehensive overview of the responsibilities of leaders in law enforcement, with emphasis on the organization and the leader's role in the organizational structure and on the interpersonal skills successful leaders have, such as communicating effectively, listening and providing feedback to others, planning, budgeting, problem solving, and empowering others.
Abstract
The text also focuses on how leaders develop themselves and their subordinates and how they educate, motivate, and coach others to reach their full potential and on dealing with problems and conflicts that inevitably arise within an organization. The 20 chapters of the text are organized according to five sections: (1) overview of management and supervision; (2) basic management and personal skills; (3) managers and the skills of others; (4) problem management; and (5) getting the job done through others. Chapters deal with such topics as decision making, time management, personnel hiring, unions, training, morale, discipline and problem behavior, complaints and grievances, stress, productivity, performance evaluation, and managing for the future. Appendixes contain supplemental information on law enforcement management and supervision. References, tables, figures, and photographs
