This fifth edition of the POST (California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training) Basic Course Management Guide offers organizational, operational, and technical guidelines for the delivery of the Regular Basic Course, including guidance on the development of internal academy management policies.
Abstract
Following an overview of the Regular Basic Course presented in the police academy, a section addresses academy management guidelines. These guidelines should assist each academy in developing a mission statement, identification of core values, and the development of internal policies related to academy management. Among the issues addressed in these guidelines are academy policy, academy training mission, the general responsibility of all academy staff to students; and the responsibilities of the academy director, academy coordinator, and the instructional staff. Another section of the guide focuses on the learning domain instructional system. Topics addressed are concepts and process definitions, domain training specifications, list of learning domains, philosophy of student workbooks, and the curriculum development process. The section on instructional planning covers the instruction design, sequencing, and scheduling phases. A section on instructional quality pertains to evaluating instructors and the voluntary basic course instructor certification program. Other sections of the Management Guide provide guidelines for testing regulations, the management of scenario testing, safety control and management, an overview of the physical conditioning program, and the basic training support system. Instructional resources are described in the concluding section.
