A CRITIQUE OF THE CURRENT EMPHASIS ON QUANTIFYING AND REPORTING CORRECTIONS ACTIVITIES, STATING THAT NOT ENOUGH CONCERN IS GIVEN TO THE HUMAN ASPECTS OF THE CORRECTIONS SYSTEM.
Abstract
IT IS CONTENDED THAT THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM, IN AN EFFORT TO DEFEND ITSELF FROM CRITICISMS OF INEFFICIENCY, HAS BEEN FORCED TO DEMONSTRATE ITS ACTIVITY THROUGH ACCOUNTABILITY PROFILES AND INCREASING REPORTS ON QUANTIFIABLE CORRECTIONAL FUNCTIONS. THE AUTHOR STATES THAT DURING THIS PROCESS OF MEASURING AND REPORTING, THE 'PEOPLE' ASPECT OF THE OPERATION IS GIVEN LESS CONSIDERATION THAN THE 'PAPER' ASPECTS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT BETTER MEANS OF EVALUATION AND LESS INTERFERENCE FROM OUTSIDE FORCES ARE NECESSARY STEPS FOR IMPROVING CORRECTIONS.
