This article describes one supervising officer's activities in managing a correctional facility.
Abstract
The article describes a day in the professional life of a correctional supervisor at a Canadian penitentiary. First, he must be certain that each shift under his control has adequate personnel to ensure safety and security. In the event of an unusual incident, such as an inmate threatening suicide, he must assemble a team of specialists to monitor the situation and attempt to bring it to a non-violent conclusion. The supervisor had 12 years experience as a correctional officer, including 2 years at a maximum-security facility. He describes the challenges of learning to supervise the men he had worked with during those years. He emphasizes the importance of leaving job stresses at the institution, the need for improving staff-inmate relations, the responsibility for ensuring staff safety, and the challenges and successes of being a supervisor. He concludes with renewed emphasis on the importance of interaction between staff and inmates.
