Participatory management of corrections is not a democratic process in the sense that the majority rules, but it ensures that everyone receives the opportunity to be heard before a decision is made.
Abstract
Areas in which participatory management can be useful include planning for additional inmate beds, managing inmate populations, developing a training program, and establishing an employee assistance program. Involving staff in these decisions not only makes staff feel that they are a part of the decisionmaking process, but also presents management with a variety of possible solutions to a problem. Corrections administrators should never underestimate the expertise of their staff, since the staff run the facilities 24 hours a day.
